Basic Biography

Full name: Holland Jefferson Junior

Age: 50

Gender: male

Species: human

Holland is the First Mate and can be used as an NPC in the story [1].

Appearance and personality

Holland is a broad man who seems to carry as much fat as he does muscle. His hair reveals his age, because otherwise he has a youthful look in his eyes and a boyish smile, especially while at sky. His beard is thick, but well groomed. Holland wears a plain blue-grey naval longcoat with only a few signs of wear. He is never seen without his pine walking stick. As an ex-naval officer Holland knows sky-sailing inside and out, and is never short of a quick piece of advice to give to the less experienced crewmembers.

Thanks to a series of war wounds Holland has had a number of brass plates installed on or under his skin, "to keep my insides from falling out" he'd say. The last wound to the leg was the most serious - Holland refused to have a replacement leg fitted and so the navy refused to keep him in their service. Thus Holland Jefferson walks with a slight limp.

Holland is quite proud of his walking stick, an heirloom apparently, and his longcoat is also a throwback to his sky sailing days, and if you look closely you can see where its old decorations were removed.

Holland Jefferson Junior is a fiercely loyal soldier and would probably make an even better friend. He can be boisterous and loud one minute, and calm and reflective the next. Holland is extremely dependable. However, he is not used to working with pirates, and he struggles to view lack of discipline as anything but a weakness. Even a disorganised rabble of pirates could benefit from some order. He is rarely off duty, and other than admiring sky ships he doesn't seem to have many personal interests.

Character Story

The Jefferson family was a big name in the coal rush of the 18th century, but emigrated to Brittania before the rush was over. According to Holland, his father's dying wish was that he join the military. From a young age until his mid-forties Holland had a successful career in the navy. This was cut short due to injury, and his loyalty to the Brittish crown was lost.
