History

Harling Pass is a farming community located in Jefferson Territory [1]. Little dextrocite has been found in the area, and the ground remains fertile and suitable for farming. Although generally quiet, the community sees a few visitors such as independent miners that find their way into this little town to trade their wares. Harling Pass has a local mayor and a sheriff. The local saloon is named the Iron Buffalo and sees regular gambling and drinking.

Social Issues

The Old West is a haven for people from all backgrounds. This variety of cultures and viewpoints makes for a mixed society. Some rural areas, still depending on dextrocite coal extraction, hold on to narrow views on roles in the community. The traditional family of father, mother and many children is the corner stone, and anything that deviates from that is seen as wrong and a threat to society. Any same-sex couples will be looked down on at best, or physically assaulted as punishment at its worst [2]. Only if very few cases will the community take punishment as far as death.

Harling Pass is not kind to Tainted. Once a Tainted is found, he or she will most likely be killed swiftly, for fear of spreading disease or corrupting the young [3].

Notable Characters

Katherine Solias: A writer who tricked Daenelia Bradley into allowing her to travel with the Steamhawke crew [4]. She is the daughter of the owner of the Iron Buffalo Saloon and sister to Davad [5].

Davad Solias: Brother to Katherine Solias and son of the owner of the Iron Buffalo Saloon [6] who became infatuated with with Melisande's undercover identity Pauline [7]. He believed Pauline to have been kidnapped and brainwashed by the Steamhawke pirates and attempted to save her [8].

Sheriff Tubbs: The man who keeps the peace the best he can [9].

Larry Murphy: The only man crazy enough to ever have kept a sky ship in a large hangar outside of town. Larry's hangar is known as Murphy's Folly. Daenelia paid him to store the Steamhawke in his hangar, while the crew traveled on to Kanesville [10].

Notable Places

Iron Buffalo Saloon: A bar that is also an inn [11].

The Roosting Cockerel: A smaller bar and inn with a female owner. The owner and patrons held Mitchell "Mistake" Barnes things for ransom, causing a brawl between the townspeople and the Steamhawke pirate crew [12].

Main Street: Where the small businesses can be found. It has been established that there is a tailor shop [13] with dresses and other outfits [14], dry goods store [15], shoe store [16], a hardware store manned by a male clerk [17], restaurant, small hotel (most likely the Roosting Cockerel), a rougher, possible illegal bar[18], a home that sells flowers [19], and some houses.
